The Ultimate 2025 Planting Guide for Blackstone, Millville, and Surrounding Communities
January 27, 2025The Blackstone & Millville Garden Club mission is to encourage gardening, support local biodiversity, and promote sustainable practices in our community. Here’s everything you need to know about borrowing and donating seeds:
How to Borrow Seeds
- Browse the Collection: Visit the seed bank cabinet in the Blackstone Public Library or the Millville Free Public Library and explore the wide variety of seeds available, from vegetables and herbs to flowers and native plants.
- Choose Your Seeds: Select up the seeds you want to use. Please only take what you can realistically use this season. There are blank packets available on the cabinet so you can take only the seeds you’ll be needing.
- Log Your Activity: You can leave a record at Seed Library Log so we can keep track of the seed library patrons. Feel free to leave your name, email, and message (info on types of seeds you’re getting). This helps us track usage and restock popular varieties.
- Grow and Enjoy: Plant your seeds, watch them grow, and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
How to Donate Seeds
- Harvest Quality Seeds: Collect seeds from healthy, mature plants in your garden. Ensure the seeds are clean, dry, and properly labeled.
- Label Your Donation: Use the labeling supplies in the cabinet to include the plant’s name (common and scientific, if possible), variety, and the date and location of harvest. Add any growing tips or notes, if you’d like.
- Drop Off Your Seeds: Place your labeled seeds in the designated donation section within the cabinet. Do not leave them with the Library staff or drop them off the book drop.
- Support the Community: By donating seeds, you help other gardeners and contribute to a thriving local ecosystem.
Guidelines for Borrowing and Donating
- Seed Viability: Available seeds are provided as-is. While we strive for quality, we can’t guarantee germination rates.
- Responsibility: If possible, let some of your plants go to seed and return some seeds to the library to keep the cycle going.
- Donation Standards: Please only donate seeds from open-pollinated or heirloom plants. Avoid hybrid or genetically modified seeds. If you do not know what you have, please do indicate this when you label your donation.
